What Are Cocoa Beans?

Cocoa beans are the seeds of the evergreen cacao tree (Theobroma cacao), which grows in tropical regions. Each bean is oval in shape and rich in fat, protein, theobromine, starch, and minerals such as phosphoric acid, potassium, and magnesium oxide.

Cocoa Bean Origins in China

Cocoa trees were first introduced to Taiwan in 1922, and today the main cocoa-growing regions in mainland China are Hainan, Guangxi, and Yunnan. These tropical areas provide:

However, due to China’s limited tropical zones, only small-scale cocoa cultivation is possible, and production remains low.

Global Cocoa Bean Origins

  • Cocoa trees thrive in tropical regions around the Equator (20°N–20°S). Major cocoa-producing countries include:
  • West Africa – Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Cameroon (≈65% of global output)
  • Latin America – Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, VenezuelaAsia – Indonesia, Malaysia

Different cocoa varieties determine the flavor and quality of chocolate:

  • Criollo – Known as the finest cocoa, with delicate aroma and complex flavor. It’s rare and represents only about 5% of global production. Grown mainly in Venezuela, the Caribbean, Madagascar, and Java.
  • Forastero – The most common variety, accounting for 80% of production, with a strong, bitter taste. Found in West Africa, Brazil, Malaysia, and Indonesia, and widely used for mass-market chocolate.
  • Trinitario – A hybrid of Criollo and Forastero, developed in Trinidad. It combines high yield with fine flavor and represents about 15% of global cocoa, ideal for premium chocolate production.
